Off Licences in England are an institution – the shining star for every midnight roamer. They guarantee the emergency supply of beer, cigarettes and unwholesome foods. Corner shops are fighting theirs in the homogenized retail business of polished global brands. They have that scruffy personality – Shopping there is an experience.
Shelf-life, crammed with a dazzling array of almost expired items in no conceivable order. Behind the counter there usually stands one dreary eyed guy with a broken soul. When I stand there to pay I always think of the slogan in Clerks :
